Movie Life Lessons: You Can Fail At What You Don't Want To Do
So Why Not Take A Chance On Something You Do Enjoy?
In a 2007 interview with the Hamilton Spectator, Jim Carey mentioned if he hadn't succeeded in show business, he would have worked at Dofasco Steel Mill in Hamilton, Ontario. Growing up, he observed workers at the mills and believed that's “where the great jobs were.” His dad worked as an accountant until he got let go when Jim was 12 years old and it forced their family to try anything to survive. After school, Jim and his brother would work 8-hour shifts as janitors and security guards at a tire factory. At age 16, Jim quit school and continued working at the factory while honing his craft as a comedian.
Regarding his father, Jim had this to say, “My father could have been a great comedian but he didn't believe that that was possible for him, and so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant, and when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job, and our family had to do whatever we could to survive."
It's amazing what we can take away from difficult situations
What Jim Carey got from his father's financial hardship was: you can fail at something you don't want to do, so why not take a chance on doing something you love?
Carey is a believer in visualization. The Law of Attraction. Whatever you want to call it. Me too. I recently wrote about how to visualize your goals in life by telling yourself a story.
Carey was a guest on the Oprah show and shared an amazing story about his journey to success. He wrote himself a check for $10 million five years in advance and made it his goal to cash it on the exact date he wrote on the check. Believe it or not, Carey booked Dumb & Dumber right before that date and was able to realize this dream of his! Visualizing success and working hard towards its realization can go a long way--this inspiring story is living proof of that!
