No Rest For The Weary
6:14am-Woke up to my son yelling that he wanted to get out o the crib. Same as at 4am. And 1:15am. So “woke up” is really a relative term.
This on top of the fact that I was out late last night at a literary agent friend’s house who lives in the same neighborhood. Didn’t make it into bed until after midnight. Mostly because it was a good time hanging with him. We discussed among other things my own book(s), as well as the many incredible books I’ve read written by the many incredible indie authors I’ve come to know on my own author journey.
It is in that synergistic mindset that I am hopeful I will be able to bring the two worlds/industries I have been operating in together for the purpose of turning these amazing books into blockbuster movies and tv shows. My agent friend was enthusiastic.
8:15-9:30-Making family breakfast and packing kids’ lunches. Then, getting the kids off to school. This has become considerably more enjoyable (and easier) since moving to a bucolic suburb in New York than attempting the same in the heart of Westwood, California.
9:30-the plan was to write, but alas some personal phone calls came up, followed by my wife returning home with some breakfast food for us. So, instead of working, I ate with her, the two of us use this limited quiet time to talk about kids, work, and real estate. Why? What do you all talk about at the breakfast table?
10:30-the plan was again to start writing, however I spent the past hour responding to emails and getting myself better organized for the day. I tend to function well on little sleep, but even for me, less than four straight hours is tough.
Besides following up with my agent friend, I have several producers and managers waiting on breakdowns of some of this IP (intellectual property) that I am looking to bring to market as a producer.
And meanwhile, I still haven’t watched all of The Last of Us ep 3 yet,and every time I go on social media I see people posting about it whcih means it’s only a matter of time before I stumble onto a spoiler. Usually, it’s addiction tv or a great book that keeps me up that late and lacking sleep. But alas, my three year old decided this was the month he would learn how to scream at the top of his lungs whenever he wakes up. I imagine this is the hold music that plays in the elevator ride down to the underworld. Just a barrage of screaming demands.
That, or the “most annoying sound in the world” Jim Carrey makes in Dumb and Dumber.
Hopefully, I will get to episode 3 of The Last of Us sometime today.
That, or maybe a nap.
Now it’s 11:38 and I am about to post this (I think it is easier to update these posts throughout the day rather than try to write them in one lump. That may not apply in all cases, but these bts blog posts seem best handled that way.
Once this post is up it is time to (finally) turn to the next handful of chapters I have to edit in The Double before that goes to the editor for a final pass. As it is also the first of the month, I am due to start discussing with my designer the look of Book 2 in “The Eddie Ankin Series.”
I am trying to learn how to work smarter not harder (as I first heard suggested by Scrooge McDuck in “Duck Tales” many many cartoons ago). Unfortunately, I am not that smart. So, I guess it’s the “ground and pound” approach to the day’s work. Same as it ever was.
More to come. Stay tuned…
